Seventh Grade Assessment 2

What is a scale in music?

A collection of pitches that make up the notes of a song.

Solfege is a technique to give each note a syllable (do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do) to help teach the melody.

What are “intervals” in music?

Intervals are the relationship or distance of one note to another.  We use the words numbers to label these relationships.

Do – do          Unison

Do- re             second

Do-mi             third

Do-fa              fourth

Do-so             fifth

Do-la              sixth

Do-ti               seventh

Do-do(high) octave

Half step:       the smallest distance between two notes

Whole Step: a combination of two half steps.

Tell us what is the difference between “melody” and “harmony” in a song.

Melody:  a succession of musical notes.  The recognizable part to a song.

Harmony:  two melodies combined (musical notes sounded simultaneously).  Usually the harmony line is sang under the melody.

Oh –                       Say         can          you         see

Part 2      so            mi         do        mi        so      so

Part 3      so            mi            do          do            re           mi

What does the “key signature” show us on a piece of music?

The key is the importance of one pitch over the others in a scale.  The keynote is described as the home tone.  In solfege, the keynote is “do”.  IN the key of C (all the white notes on the piano) that note is C.

Describe the following terms: a) monophony, b)polyphony, c)homophony.

Monophony: music that consist of one melody (everyone sings one melody in unison)

Polyphony:  Music that combines two or more simultaneous voice parts with different rhythms.

Homophony: Music which consists of two or more voice parts with similar or identical rhythms.  (when we song the National Anthem in 2 or 3 parts)

What are dynamics in music?

Dynamics are terms we use in music to let us know how soft or loud the music is.

Piano (p) soft,

Mezzo Piano (mp) medium soft

Mezzo Forte (mf) medium loud

Forte (f) loud,

Crescendo (cresc.) gradually louder

Decrescendo (decresc.) dradually softer

What does a sharp note do in music?  What does a flat note do in music?

A sharp (#) note raises the pitch by a half step

A flat (b) note lowers a pitch be a half step.
