Rough Draft:

Topic 1:     What is range in music

I will define the term "range" as it relates to vocal music.  I will use the "Grove Dictionary of Music" for my source.  I will give musical examples of instruments, and vocal scores including the ranges for sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses.

Topic 2:       What is normal vocal range for middle school age students.

I will talk about the  two distinct parts to their voice: head voice and chest voice.   For a growing adolescent male, this area of the voice almost doesn’t exist.  I will show the ranges of middle school age students.  Boys of this age simply cannot make a sound in many parts of this range due to the fact that their vocal chords have not fully come together because of their rapid growth.  This is why it is often called “the break” in the voice.  I will get my information from choralnet.net

Topic 3:     What factors play a role in high and low vocal ranges (breathing, posture, vowel formation)

I will talk about the signinficant factors that play a role in high and low voices.  I will talk about the physionomy of the voice from the book "Anatomy of the Human Body". I will talk about the use of loud, low register shouting or singing.

Also, I will talk about the factors we covered in class including posture, breath control, diction, etc.  I will get my information from the Essential Musicianship book.

Topic 4:     What are some suggested exercises to improve your vocal range

I will specific tips that are mentioned in Henry Leck's video the Boy's Changing Voice.  I will give exercices he suggests that expand the vocal range.

Topic 5:     Possible signing routine to practice improving your vocal range

I will outline a possible routine for practicing your vocal exercises as a conclusion to my topic.
