Philosophy

The Music Technology program is designed to give students an opportunity to experience learning music through the use of keyboards and computers. The purpose of this course is to broaden the students’ musical background, enabling them to use their creativity through performance, composition, and music appreciation. Notating, composing, sequencing, editing music on a computer, performing on rhythmic and melodic instruments, and playing keyboard at a beginner level are some of the skills that will be included in the coursework.

Student Expectations

The students will complete lessons on the keyboard and computer in class each week. Each student will compose, perform, improvise, and analyze music according to their music ability. Eventually, each student will have an electronic portfolio that includes all ongoing and completed projects. Students will have access to their portfolio at home through the internet and/or disks. Occasionally, students will have to complete assignments at home. The parents of Music Technology students should encourage their child to participate at all times in order to successfully complete the class work and homework assignments given throughout the year on the computers and electronic piano keyboards.

Lessons Scope and Sequence

All music tech students will learn basic music concepts and Music terminology including the following:  Beat, Rhythm, Tempo, Dynamics, Time Signatures, Range, notes (whole, half, quarter), rests (whole, half, quarter), Phrase, Form, Instrumentation, Melody (step, leap, repeat), Harmony, Chords.  Even though we will cover these topics in all music tech classes, each grade will have a different concentration:

Sixth Grade Concentration

Students will review basic music theory using Music Ace 2 and complete lesson assignments for each rhythmic or melodic lesson. They will learn the notes on the keyboard and perform simple piano exercises individually and with the group.

Seventh Grade Concentration

Students  will compose and orchestrate original compositions, individually or in groups. The compositions will be performed and recorded in class.

Eighth Grade Concentration

Students will explore various music styles through researching, listening, composing, and performing in class.  Students will explore historical music forms through famous composers and also popular music forms through contemporary music.

Class Website

Student compositions will be available to download on a class website. Students are expected to access assignments in class and at home by logging on to the class website. Their electronic portfolios will be listed on the site and include ongoing projects. The website will be updated weekly, or as needed, with current class information and student projects.

Hardware

The music technology lab is equipped with 20 music workstations that include eMac computers compatible for music software, piano keyboards, and MIDI interfaces.

Software

Each workstation has a variety of music software installed in to the computers. Each software program serves a different function of the music technology curriculum. Music Ace 2, by Harmonic Vision, covers music theory, reading notation, and simple performance. PrintMusic, is a notation program for creating and looking at compositions. GarageBand is a popular program that serves many functions including recording MIDI or audio, looping, sequencing, and creating wave files of your projects on a CD. Along with music software students will use word processors to evaluate their projects or projects from other students.

Conduct

Students in the Music Technology program must have excellent conduct at all times. If a student disrupts the class by talking, getting out of their seat without permission, and interrupting the class to leave for non-emergencies, the class will fall behind. At this time, each class session is for 50 minutes per week. Time is very limited to learn about music and to perform well. We would like to learn as much as possible in music this year. The student must follow directions willingly at all times in the computer program.

Grading

Daily Grade (40%): Student stays on task on assigned work, has a positive attitude, contributes to class discussions, is attentive and avoids talking during instructional time, is cooperative with ALL other students, brings Headphones every class.                            Projects/Performance (25%): Class projects done on time and according to teacher's instructions.                                                Home Assignments (20%):  Assignments are due the next class for full credit, 2nd class for half credit, and zero after that.             Music Assessment (15%):  Music Tests on terminology discussed in class.  Three tests (5% each) during the trimester.              Grades are determined on the student's personal musical growth in the duration of the course. Attendance, participation, and following directions will result in a favorable grade for the students. Completion of assignments will require accessing each student's electronic portfolio at home through the class website. It is expected that the music student will attend EVERY class session. Missing sessions will cause a student to fall far behind. WE ARE A TEAM working together to learn more about music, and we need everyone to participate willingly at all times!
